Rooftop Solar Maintenance for Gorakhpur's Climate

Solar is genuinely low-maintenance โ€” but "low" isn't "zero." Here's what actually needs attention, and how often.

One of the most attractive things about rooftop solar is that it has no moving parts โ€” panels don't wear out from use the way a motor or a compressor does. But performance can still quietly drop over months if a few basic things are ignored, especially in a region with Gorakhpur's mix of dust, heat and heavy monsoon rain. None of it is complicated, but it is worth knowing.

Cleaning: the single biggest factor

Dust and grime sitting on panels block sunlight and can measurably reduce output โ€” this is the most common, and most fixable, cause of underperformance we see. In Gorakhpur's dusty pre-monsoon months, a wipe-down roughly every 2-3 weeks keeps panels performing close to their rated output; during and just after monsoon, rain does a lot of the cleaning naturally, but it's still worth checking for mud splashes and leaf debris. Clean early morning or evening with plain water and a soft cloth or squeegee โ€” never cold water on hot panels (thermal shock can stress the glass), and avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh detergents.

Monsoon-specific checks

Heavy monsoon rain is generally good for panels โ€” it's a free wash โ€” but it's worth a quick visual check after the season's first few heavy spells: look for any water pooling near junction boxes or cabling, confirm the earthing/lightning protection is intact, and check that mounting structure bolts haven't loosened from wind or thermal expansion over the year. These are quick checks, not major work, but skipping them is how small issues turn into bigger ones.

Watching the inverter

Your inverter display (or app, on newer models) shows daily and cumulative generation โ€” glancing at it periodically is the easiest way to catch a problem early. A sudden, unexplained drop in daily generation on a clear day (not just cloud cover) is usually the first sign something needs attention, whether that's a tripped connection, a fault code, or a string of panels underperforming due to shading or dirt. Catching this within days rather than months is what keeps a small issue from becoming a bigger loss in generation over the year.

What warranties actually cover

It's worth understanding the two different warranty numbers you'll see quoted for solar equipment:

  • Panel performance warranty (typically ~25 years): guarantees panels will still produce close to a specified percentage of their original rated output after a set number of years โ€” this is about gradual, expected degradation, not a repair promise.
  • Panel product warranty (typically ~10-12 years): covers manufacturing defects in the physical panel itself.
  • Inverter warranty (typically shorter, often 5-10 years depending on brand): inverters have electronic components and generally need attention or replacement sooner than panels โ€” worth budgeting for as a normal part of system ownership over 25 years, not a sign anything went wrong.

Signs it's time to call for a check-up

A noticeably dusty or discoloured panel surface, a visible crack or damage after a storm, an inverter error light or fault code, or a generation drop that doesn't recover after cleaning are all reasonable reasons to get a technician to look at the system, rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.
