On-Grid Solar: Why You Don't Need (or Get) a Battery
Most PM Surya Ghar systems don't provide blackout backup, and that's a deliberate safety feature, not a missing part.
Short answer: Standard PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar systems are grid-interactive (on-grid), meaning they're designed to shut down automatically during a power cut, and don't include a battery. This is intentional: it's a safety feature called anti-islanding, which prevents your system from feeding electricity back into lines that utility workers may be repairing during an outage. The grid effectively acts as your 'battery' for surplus power. If you specifically want backup during blackouts, that requires a separate hybrid system with local battery storage, which changes your costs and isn't fully covered by standard net metering subsidies.
The misconception
A lot of homeowners in UP, especially anyone who's dealt with frequent outages, assume solar panels automatically mean backup power during a cut. It's a reasonable assumption, and it's wrong for the standard system most people install under PM Surya Ghar. Understanding why clears up a lot of confusion before you buy, not after.
Why on-grid systems shut off during a power cut
A standard on-grid (grid-interactive) inverter is required to include anti-islanding protection. When the grid goes down, whether for maintenance or a fault, your inverter detects that and disconnects your system automatically. This isn't a defect, it's there to protect the linemen working to restore power: without it, your system could keep energizing a line that a utility worker believes is safely dead. This is a standard, non-negotiable safety requirement across grid-tied solar systems, not something specific to any one brand or installer.
So where does your surplus power go?
During normal operation, any electricity you generate beyond what you're using is exported to the grid, and net metering credits you for it (see our net metering guide). In effect, the grid functions as a giant shared battery, you're not storing your own surplus locally, you're banking it as billing credit against the grid. That works well for reducing your bill, but it does nothing for you during an actual outage, because the whole system is offline at that point too.
If you actually want blackout backup
That requires a hybrid inverter system with a local battery bank, a genuinely different (and more expensive) setup than standard net-metered solar. Hybrid systems can keep select loads running during a cut, but they change your total system cost meaningfully, and standard PM Surya Ghar/UPNEDA subsidies are structured around grid-tied systems, not battery storage, so don't assume the subsidy math from our other guides applies the same way to a hybrid setup. If backup power is a real priority for you, say so during your site visit, it changes the recommendation.
