What Size Solar System Does a 2BHK or 3BHK Home Need?
A rough, real-world starting point in terms you actually think in, house type and AC count, not kilowatts.
Short answer: A typical 2BHK home in UP running 1-2 ACs and consuming 150-300 units a month generally needs a 2-3 kW system. A larger 3BHK with more ACs and higher consumption often lands in the 3-5 kW range. These need roughly 80-100 sq. ft. of shadow-free roof per kW, so 200-500 sq. ft. total depending on size. A 3kW system currently qualifies for the maximum combined subsidy of ₹1,08,000 (₹78,000 central + up to ₹30,000 UP state top-up). This is a starting estimate, not a substitute for a proper site visit.
Why we're answering this in house terms, not kW
Our system sizing guide walks through the technical calculation, roof area, bill amount, venue type. This page is the shortcut version, for when you just want a rough sense of "what does a house like mine need" before diving into that detail or booking a site visit.
Rough sizing by home type
- 2BHK, 1-2 ACs, 150-300 units/month: typically a 2-3 kW system, needing roughly 200-300 sq. ft. of clear roof space.
- 3BHK, 2-3 ACs, higher overall load: typically 3-5 kW, needing roughly 300-500 sq. ft.
These are starting ranges based on typical usage patterns, not fixed rules, a 2BHK with unusually heavy AC or appliance use can need more, and a lightly used 3BHK can need less. Your actual electricity bill is the more reliable input, which is why our full calculator asks for it directly.
What this means for subsidy
Under current PM Surya Ghar slabs, a 3kW system, a common fit for a typical UP home, qualifies for the maximum combined subsidy: up to ₹78,000 from the central government plus up to ₹30,000 from the UP state top-up, a maximum combined benefit of ₹1,08,000. Smaller systems get a proportionally smaller subsidy; the scheme isn't a flat amount regardless of size.
Why a site visit still matters
Roof orientation, shading from neighbouring buildings or trees, structural condition, and your actual bill (not just your home's category) all affect the right size for your specific house. Two 3BHK homes on the same street can need genuinely different systems. Use this page as a starting expectation, then use our full sizing calculator or book a free site visit for an exact number.
